Kern River Valley:
120 species (118 count day + 2 count week): A total of 23 people participated in
the field with 4 people at feeders or at a raven roost. We saw 118 plus two
forms of species on count day and two species seen during count week. This was
below the average of 123.25 species. The number of individuals was only slightly
below average with 16,216 total individuals observed on count day. Six species
had high counts: AMERICAN WIGEON, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, WILSON'S SNIPE,
HERRING GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, and PURPLE FINCH. Good birds this year:
GREAT EGRET, PEREGRINE FALCON, VARIED THRUSH, TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD (450),
SLATE-COLORED JUNCO, PINK-SIDED JUNCO.
Big misses
this year: MERLIN, VIRGINIA RAIL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, GREATER
ROADRUNNER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, VESPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH
SPARROW, and CASSIN'S FINCH.
