The sapsucker, apparently a first-yr. female, was in an uninhabited homestead along Lindblom Lane just off of Sunnyside Road, east of Janesville. Take Sunnyside Road east from Highway 395 near Janesville, then go north on Lindblom Lane (a dirt road, poorly marked with a hand-lettered sign on a fencepost). Perhaps 2-tenths of a mile north of the intersection of Lindblom and Sunnyside, on the left, is a small homestead plot with a large ranch gate covered with antler racks and a black saddle atop the cross beam. The homestead itself is well-wooded with both deciduous and coniferous trees and littered with the remnants of 2-3 trailer homes, some under construction, and other debris, etc. The sapsucker was guarding some sap wells on one of the small pines. The McCown's Longspur was found with a Horned Lark flock (including some Lapland Longspurs as well) along the north shoreline flats of Honey Lake itself, in the vicinity of Hartson Reservoir on the Dakin Unit of the Honey Lake Wildlife Area. During waterfowl hunting season, access is not allowed on the Area on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays, and may be restricted on other days; ask at the Area HQ (Fleming Unit) before entering the Area.
